T1 and Depression.

A close relative has T 1 he is depressed or has other things going on. Ive talked to his friends and its emerging that he may be lonely and not happy with the way life is going.

This in my thoughts has to be a big part of what is going on with him not taking proper care of himself. Now the thing is he is popular and not going around looking down and out but at the end of the day, when the party is over i think his demon’s take hold. Or maybe he just doesnt want to be held down by this lousy disease. I don’t know but its a area I’m looking into. Anyone have similar things going on ?

It is not unusual for any one to have some coping problems when they face a life long health condition. He should see a professional in the mental health field and go from there. As with any problem, the person has to realize they have a problem and then seek help for it. You can guide him but you can not make him accept additional help for any thing.

Depression is a problem with T1s. Most rise to the challenge and learn to live with it. But some don’t. The incidence of suicide is 3 times higher for T1 youth (under 25) than it is for the rest of the population in that age group. My 27 year old T1 neighbour was one of those numbers. She committed suicide 9 months ago. We will never understand just why she did it, but T1 and not being able to manage it was certainly an issue. She got lots of mental health support, but it wasn’t enough. Very sad.
